Fee refund · US

How to get a Wells Fargo fee refunded

The short answer

Wells Fargo charges $35 per item paid into overdraft (limited to three per business day) but lists no fee for returned items (NSF). Everyday Checking has a $15 monthly service fee with several ways to avoid it, and Extra Day Grace Period gives an extra business day to cover an overdraft.

To ask for a fee back, contact Wells Fargo soon after it posts, name the fee, its date and amount, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund. Wells Fargo decides — it isn’t guaranteed.

Wells Fargo’s overdraft rules

  • Wells Fargo says it won’t assess an overdraft fee on items of $10 or less, and won’t assess one if both your ending daily account balance and available balance are overdrawn by $10 or less after it has processed all your transactions.
  • Extra Day Grace Period: if your account is overdrawn, you have an extra business day to make covering deposits or transfers. If your available balance as of 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on that extra day is positive, the pending overdraft fees for the prior business day’s overdraft items are waived.
  • Without Debit Card Overdraft Service, ATM and everyday (one-time) debit card transactions are declined with no fee. Recurring debit card transactions you pre-authorized may be approved into overdraft at the bank’s discretion whether or not you are enrolled, and an overdraft fee would apply.
  • Wells Fargo does not charge transfer or advance fees for Overdraft Protection; advances from a linked credit account may accrue interest from the date of each advance.

How to ask for a courtesy refund

General tips — not bank policy. What works is being specific, honest and brief.

  1. Ask soon after the fee posts, and name it exactly: the fee, its date and the amount.
  2. Say briefly what happened — a deposit that hadn’t cleared yet, a timing mix-up, a first slip in years. Keep it honest.
  3. Ask for a one-time courtesy refund of that fee. If you’ve banked there a long time or rarely pay fees, it’s fair to mention it.
  4. Be polite and brief. If the answer is no, ask whether there’s a way to avoid the fee next time — low-balance alerts, overdraft settings, or a different account.
  5. Banks decide case by case. A refund once doesn’t mean you’ll get one again, and nothing guarantees one.
