How to get a PNC fee refunded

The short answer

PNC Virtual Wallet’s Spend account charges a $36 overdraft item fee (at most 1 per day) and no returned item (NSF) fee. Low Cash Mode gives at least 24 hours of Extra Time to bring the balance to $0 before overdraft fees are charged, and overdraft fees are automatically refunded if you are overdrawn by $5.00 or less at day end.

To ask for a fee back, contact PNC soon after it posts, name the fee, its date and amount, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund. PNC decides — it isn’t guaranteed.

PNC’s overdraft rules

  • Low Cash Mode is PNC’s overdraft feature for Virtual Wallet: Intelligent Alerts, Extra Time and Payment Control. Extra Time gives you at least 24 hours to bring your available Spend balance to at least $0 before overdraft fees are charged.
  • Overdraft Balance Threshold: if the account is overdrawn by $5.00 or less after all transactions are posted for the day, any overdraft item fees are automatically refunded.
  • If you overdraw your Spend account, money is transferred first from your Reserve account and then from your Growth account, and PNC lists no charge for the overdraft protection transfer.
  • Payment Control lets you choose to pay or return certain individual checks and ACH payments when your balance is negative; debit card transactions do not qualify.

How to ask for a courtesy refund

General tips — not bank policy. What works is being specific, honest and brief.

  1. Ask soon after the fee posts, and name it exactly: the fee, its date and the amount.
  2. Say briefly what happened — a deposit that hadn’t cleared yet, a timing mix-up, a first slip in years. Keep it honest.
  3. Ask for a one-time courtesy refund of that fee. If you’ve banked there a long time or rarely pay fees, it’s fair to mention it.
  4. Be polite and brief. If the answer is no, ask whether there’s a way to avoid the fee next time — low-balance alerts, overdraft settings, or a different account.
  5. Banks decide case by case. A refund once doesn’t mean you’ll get one again, and nothing guarantees one.

What PNC says: PNC’s Virtual Wallet fee schedule says that if the Spend account is overdrawn by $5.00 or less after all transactions are posted for the day, any overdraft item fees are automatically refunded, and that PNC will not charge overdraft item fees incurred during the Extra Time period if you bring your available balance to at least $0 before it expires.
