How to get a TD Bank fee refunded

The short answer

TD Bank’s TD Complete Checking lists a $35 overdraft fee (at most 3 per business day) with no fee if you are overdrawn by $50 or less, and a Grace Period that refunds the fee if you cover the overdraft by 11 p.m. ET the next business day. Complete Checking has a $15 monthly maintenance fee with several ways to waive it.

To ask for a fee back, contact TD Bank soon after it posts, name the fee, its date and amount, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund. TD Bank decides — it isn’t guaranteed.

TD Bank’s overdraft rules

  • TD says it will not charge an overdraft fee if your checking account is overdrawn by $50 or less (its overdraft threshold), and will not charge more than 3 overdraft fees per account per business day.
  • Grace Period: if you overdraw by more than $50 and bring your available balance back to at least $0 as of 11 p.m. ET on the next business day, TD refunds the overdraft fees for those items. TD says there is no limit to how many Grace Period refunds you can receive, and the balance you need includes pending debit transactions and scheduled payments.
  • You are not charged overdraft fees on ATM or one-time debit card transactions unless you enroll in TD Debit Card Advance. If a debit card transaction was authorized with a positive available balance, it is not subject to an overdraft fee.
  • Savings Overdraft Protection (linking a savings account) has no transfer fee. TD does not charge an additional fee if your account is overdrawn for multiple consecutive days.

How to ask for a courtesy refund

General tips — not bank policy. What works is being specific, honest and brief.

  1. Ask soon after the fee posts, and name it exactly: the fee, its date and the amount.
  2. Say briefly what happened — a deposit that hadn’t cleared yet, a timing mix-up, a first slip in years. Keep it honest.
  3. Ask for a one-time courtesy refund of that fee. If you’ve banked there a long time or rarely pay fees, it’s fair to mention it.
  4. Be polite and brief. If the answer is no, ask whether there’s a way to avoid the fee next time — low-balance alerts, overdraft settings, or a different account.
  5. Banks decide case by case. A refund once doesn’t mean you’ll get one again, and nothing guarantees one.

What TD Bank says: TD Bank’s Overdraft Grace Period refunds overdraft fees automatically: if you overdraw by more than $50 and bring your available balance back to at least $0 as of 11 p.m. ET on the next business day, TD will refund the overdraft fees assessed for those items. TD says there is no limit to the number of Grace Period refunds, and the year-to-date total is shown on your statement.
