How to get a Chase fee refunded

The short answer

Chase’s fee schedule lists a $34 overdraft fee per transaction (up to 3 per business day), but Chase Overdraft Assist means no overdraft fee if you end the business day overdrawn by $50 or less. Chase Total Checking has a $15 monthly service fee that you can avoid in several ways.

To ask for a fee back, contact Chase soon after it posts, name the fee, its date and amount, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund. Chase decides — it isn’t guaranteed.

Chase’s overdraft rules

  • Chase Overdraft Assist does not require enrollment and comes with eligible Chase checking accounts. If you are overdrawn by more than $50 at the end of the business day, you have until 11 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT) the next business day to make a deposit or transfer that brings the balance to overdrawn by $50 or less.
  • Standard Overdraft Practice covers checks, automatic payments and recurring debit card purchases; everyday debit card transactions (groceries, gas, dining) are not covered unless you opt in to Chase Debit Card Coverage. If you choose NO, those debit transactions are declined and you are not charged a fee.
  • No overdraft fee if the debit card transaction was authorized when there was a sufficient available balance, if the transaction is $5 or less, or if a check or ACH payment is returned unpaid.
  • Overdraft Protection (linking a Chase savings account as a backup) has no fee for the transfer; an overdraft fee can still apply if the backup account does not have enough money.

How to ask for a courtesy refund

General tips — not bank policy. What works is being specific, honest and brief.

  1. Ask soon after the fee posts, and name it exactly: the fee, its date and the amount.
  2. Say briefly what happened — a deposit that hadn’t cleared yet, a timing mix-up, a first slip in years. Keep it honest.
  3. Ask for a one-time courtesy refund of that fee. If you’ve banked there a long time or rarely pay fees, it’s fair to mention it.
  4. Be polite and brief. If the answer is no, ask whether there’s a way to avoid the fee next time — low-balance alerts, overdraft settings, or a different account.
  5. Banks decide case by case. A refund once doesn’t mean you’ll get one again, and nothing guarantees one.
