How to get a Capital One fee refunded

The short answer

Capital One says it has eliminated all overdraft fees for its consumer banking customers, and 360 Checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance. The fees its 360 Checking disclosure does list are small: $10 or $20 for a cashier’s check and $30 for an outgoing domestic wire.

To ask for a fee back, contact Capital One soon after it posts, name the fee, its date and amount, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund. Capital One decides — it isn’t guaranteed.

Capital One’s overdraft rules

  • Capital One states it has completely eliminated all overdraft fees for its consumer banking customers, while continuing to provide overdraft options.
  • Overdraft options on 360 Checking: Auto-Decline (Capital One generally declines transactions that would overdraw your account), Free Savings Transfer (an automatic transfer from your savings or money market account) and no-fee overdraft.
  • With no-fee overdraft, Capital One won’t charge a fee if it approves a check, electronic payment (like bill pay) or recurring debit card payment you can’t cover, and you can ask it to consider ATM withdrawals and one-time debit card purchases too. To qualify, you must deposit at least $250 during two of the previous three calendar months. If it pays an overdraft, you must deposit funds promptly to cover it.
  • Customers who were enrolled in Next Day Grace were automatically converted to the no-fee overdraft option.

How to ask for a courtesy refund

General tips — not bank policy. What works is being specific, honest and brief.

  1. Ask soon after the fee posts, and name it exactly: the fee, its date and the amount.
  2. Say briefly what happened — a deposit that hadn’t cleared yet, a timing mix-up, a first slip in years. Keep it honest.
  3. Ask for a one-time courtesy refund of that fee. If you’ve banked there a long time or rarely pay fees, it’s fair to mention it.
  4. Be polite and brief. If the answer is no, ask whether there’s a way to avoid the fee next time — low-balance alerts, overdraft settings, or a different account.
  5. Banks decide case by case. A refund once doesn’t mean you’ll get one again, and nothing guarantees one.
