How to cancel ChatGPT Plus

The fastest way

In ChatGPT, open your account menu, select Settings, then Billing, and under Cancel plan select Cancel. OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date, and paid features stay available until the end of the current billing period.

Cancel on the web (subscribed on chatgpt.com)

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Open your account menu and select Settings.
  3. Select Billing.
  4. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.

This is for a subscription you bought directly on chatgpt.com. OpenAI says this article covers personal ChatGPT subscriptions and self-service ChatGPT Business subscriptions.

Cancel a ChatGPT Business subscription

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Open your account menu and select Workspace settings.
  3. Select Billing, then select Manage plan.
  4. Select Cancel subscription and confirm.

If you don’t have access to workspace billing settings, ask your workspace owner for help.

If you can’t sign in to cancel

  1. Contact OpenAI Support if ChatGPT bills you directly and you can no longer use the account’s email address.
  2. Give the email linked to your account or subscription, or the billing email when applicable.
  3. Add any two of these billing details: the last four digits of your payment card, the card expiration date, the billing address, or the date of the most recent charge.
  4. Never send the complete card number.

OpenAI says its Support may be able to cancel the subscription without deleting your account.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad (billed by Apple)

If you subscribed to ChatGPT Plus through the App Store, Apple bills you, so you cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription — you may need to scroll down. If there's no cancel button, or you see red expiration text, it's already cancelled.

OpenAI says Apple manages subscriptions bought through the App Store: on iPhone or iPad, open Settings, select your name, Subscriptions, ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription. Refunds for those purchases come from Apple, and deleting your ChatGPT account doesn’t cancel an App Store subscription.

Cancel on Android (billed by Google Play)

If you subscribed to ChatGPT Plus through Google Play, cancel it in Google Play.

  1. On your Android device, open your subscriptions in Google Play.
  2. Select the subscription you want to cancel.
  3. Tap Cancel subscription.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

OpenAI says to cancel Google Play subscriptions in Google Play, signed in to the Google account you used to buy it: open Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription.

Good to know before you cancel

  • Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. If you cancel less than 24 hours before, OpenAI says the next charge may already have been processed.
  • Uninstalling the ChatGPT app doesn’t cancel your subscription, and you don’t need to delete your account to stop future charges.
  • Deleting your ChatGPT account cancels subscriptions billed directly by ChatGPT, but not Apple App Store subscriptions. Cancel through Apple first.
  • Check your purchase receipt to see which platform billed you. A subscription bought on chatgpt.com doesn’t appear in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions.

Will I get a refund?

Usually not. OpenAI says cancelling stops future renewals but doesn’t automatically refund previous charges, and payments are generally non-refundable. For an unused individual subscription, a discretionary refund may be available if you contact OpenAI within seven days of the charge. OpenAI says there is no automatic prorated refund after seven days.

When does my access end?

OpenAI says that after an ordinary cancellation, paid features remain available until the end of the current billing period. If a refund is granted, access covered by the refunded charge normally ends earlier.

I subscribed through Apple or Google Play. Who do I ask for a refund?

OpenAI says to request a refund directly from Apple for App Store purchases. For subscriptions bought on chatgpt.com or through Google Play, request it through OpenAI Support while signed in to the ChatGPT account tied to the charge.

I was charged again after cancelling. What happened?

OpenAI says to check your cancellation confirmation and next billing date, and whether another account or platform has an active subscription. If you have more than one subscription, cancel the one you no longer want through the platform that billed you.
