How to cancel Costco membership

Cancel at a warehouse

Go to the membership counter at any Costco warehouse. Only the Primary Member can cancel.
Speak with a team member and ask to cancel the membership.

Costco says you receive an immediate refund when you cancel at the counter.

Call Costco’s Member Services Center at 1-800-774-2678.
Speak to a live agent and ask to cancel the membership.

Stop Auto Renewal online

Go to Costco.com and select Sign In / Register. Your membership must be verified first.
Under Account, choose Renew Membership.
Remove the card you set up for Auto Renew.

This keeps your membership from renewing but doesn’t cancel it. Costco says to do it at least 72 hours before the first day of your renewal month.

Good to know before you cancel

Costco.com can’t cancel a membership. Costco says changes that involve a transaction, such as refunds, can’t be made on Costco.com or by live chat. Use a warehouse or the phone.
Turning off Auto Renewal isn’t the same as cancelling. If you only remove Auto Renewal, your membership lasts until the end of your current membership year.
To avoid an Auto Renewal charge, cancel it at least 72 hours before the first day of your renewal month. If you remove it within 48 hours of the Auto Renewal date, your card will likely be charged, but Costco says it systematically refunds the charge within two business days.
Only the Primary Member can cancel a membership.

Will I get a refund?

Costco says you receive an immediate refund when you cancel at a warehouse membership counter, and its Member Privileges page promises a risk-free 100% satisfaction guarantee on your membership, with limited exceptions. Costco’s help pages don’t say whether the refund is the full fee or prorated. If your membership auto-renewed and you want a refund, Costco’s help says to use its refund request link, and refunds take about 5-7 business days.

Can I cancel my Costco membership online?

Not according to Costco’s help. It lists the warehouse counter and Member Services by phone as the ways to cancel. Online, you can add or remove Auto Renewal under Renew Membership in your Costco.com account.

What happens if I just turn off Auto Renewal?

Your membership isn’t charged again at renewal. Costco says that to let your membership expire at the end of your current membership year, you should remove Auto Renew at least two business days before the first day of your renewal month.

How long before renewal do I need to act?
