How to get an RBC Royal Bank fee refunded
The short answer
RBC’s schedule lists a $10.00 NSF (returned item) fee, limited to one per two business days on the same account and not charged when the item overdraws the account by less than $10, plus a $5.00 overdraft handling fee when RBC lets you overdraw without Overdraft Protection. RBC Day to Day Banking has a $4.00 monthly fee that can be rebated to $0.
To ask for a fee back, contact RBC Royal Bank soon after it posts, name the fee, its date and amount, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund. RBC Royal Bank decides — it isn’t guaranteed.

RBC Royal Bank’s common fees
From RBC Royal Bank’s official fee schedule, in Canadian dollars. Fees below are for RBC Day to Day Banking, RBC Advantage Banking, RBC Signature No Limit Banking.
| Fee | Amount | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee | $10.00 each, for every presentment or re-presentment of the payment item[1][4] | RBC says it will not charge an NSF fee more than once within two business days on the same account, or if the item would overdraw the account by less than $10. RBC describes optional Overdraft Protection (subject to credit approval) as a way to stop cheques bouncing and being returned. |
| Overdraft handling fee | $5.00 (the schedule’s fee column is headed ‘Per Item Fee unless stated otherwise’), plus overdraft interest[1] | RBC defines it as the fee for allowing you to overdraw your account when you do not have Overdraft Protection, or for exceeding your Overdraft Protection limit; it is at RBC’s discretion. If you or any co-owner is a Quebec resident, the account is not charged this fee for exceeding the Overdraft Protection limit. |
| Overdraft Protection (optional) | $5.00 per month, plus overdraft interest of 22% per year on the overdrawn balance[1][2][3] | The monthly fee is waived on RBC Signature No Limit Banking and RBC VIP Banking (subject to credit approval). It is not charged if any account co-owner is a Quebec resident. |
| Monthly fee - RBC Day to Day Banking | $4.00 per month (12 debit transactions included)[1][2][5] | Only one monthly fee rebate per account owner applies, and RBC applies the one with the greatest discount. Value Program: enrol the account, hold two or more other eligible RBC product categories (for example a credit card, investments, a mortgage or a small business relationship) and complete a direct deposit, pre-authorized payment or eligible bill payment each month; the rebate is $6 with two categories, or up to $12.95 with three or more, capped at the monthly fee. Other rebates and waivers: Seniors Rebate (age 65 or older, applied automatically, $0 fee), and fully waived for Indigenous Peoples or RDSP beneficiaries (proof in person at a branch). |
| Excess debit transaction fee - RBC Day to Day Banking | $1.25 for each debit transaction over the 12 included each month[1][2] | Interac e-Transfers (up to 999 a month), transfers between your own accounts, public transit purchases and RBC Virtual Visa Debit transactions do not count toward the 12. |
| Monthly fee - RBC Advantage Banking | $12.95 per month (unlimited debit transactions)[1][5] | Fully waived at age 24 or under (RBC Advantage Banking for students). Value Program rebate of up to $12.95 with three or more product categories. The Seniors Rebate is $4.00, leaving $8.95. Newcomers who arrived within the last 5 years may have the fee waived for the first 12 months. |
| Monthly fee - RBC Signature No Limit Banking | $16.95 per month (unlimited debit transactions)[1][3][5] | RBC says the Value Program can reduce the monthly cost to as low as $4. The Seniors Rebate is $4.00, leaving $12.95. |
| Non-RBC ATM access fee (Interac and PLUS networks) | RBC Day to Day Banking: $2.00 each at a non-RBC ATM with the Interac logo; $3.00 each at PLUS network ATMs in Canada or the U.S.; $5.00 each at PLUS network ATMs outside Canada or the U.S.[1][2] | RBC Advantage Banking: Interac access fee is free; RBC Signature No Limit Banking: 3 free per month, then $2.00. The ATM owner’s own surcharge (convenience fee) is separate and is not an RBC fee. |
| Foreign transaction - debit card purchase in the United States (Interac Debit Cross Border) | $1.00 each on Day to Day Banking and Advantage Banking (Signature No Limit: 5 free per month, then $1.00), plus the purchase is converted at 2.5% over the Interbank Spot Rate[1][2] | Cash withdrawals at PLUS network ATMs outside Canada are also converted at 2.5% above the card network’s benchmark rate. |
RBC Royal Bank’s overdraft rules
- Federal rules in force since March 12, 2026 cap NSF fees on personal deposit accounts at federally regulated banks at $10, allow no more than one NSF fee per account within 2 business days, and allow none when the account is overdrawn by less than $10 (Financial Consumer Agency of Canada).
- RBC says Overdraft Protection gives between $500 and $5,000 of protection for most bank accounts (up to $10,000 with VIP Banking), subject to credit approval, and comes into effect automatically, up to your limit, whenever your account is overdrawn.
- RBC says that if an account is overdrawn, a deposit is required at least once each month in an amount that covers the monthly overdraft interest.
- FCAC says financial institutions must send e-alerts when your account balance falls below a threshold; $100 is the default and you can change the amount or opt out.
How to ask for a courtesy refund
General tips — not bank policy. What works is being specific, honest and brief.
- Ask soon after the fee posts, and name it exactly: the fee, its date and the amount.
- Say briefly what happened — a deposit that hadn’t cleared yet, a timing mix-up, a first slip in years. Keep it honest.
- Ask for a one-time courtesy refund of that fee. If you’ve banked there a long time or rarely pay fees, it’s fair to mention it.
- Be polite and brief. If the answer is no, ask whether there’s a way to avoid the fee next time — low-balance alerts, overdraft settings, or a different account.
- Banks decide case by case. A refund once doesn’t mean you’ll get one again, and nothing guarantees one.
What RBC Royal Bank says: RBC’s Right Account Guarantee: if you open or upgrade to an eligible RBC banking account (including Day to Day Banking, Advantage Banking and Signature No Limit Banking) and are not completely satisfied, RBC will refund your monthly fees for up to 3 months. You must close the account and apply for the refund, or switch to another account, within 4 months of account opening or upgrade; it is limited to one account opening or upgrade per customer per calendar year, and the offer may be withdrawn at any time without notice. For the Indigenous Peoples fee waiver, RBC says fees paid before eligibility is confirmed won’t be refunded, and the RDSP waiver isn’t applied retroactively.
