How to get a CIBC fee refunded

The short answer

CIBC lists a $10 NSF fee (not charged more than once in 2 business days on the same account, or when you’re overdrawn by less than $10) and a $5 charge plus 21% interest when it lets you overdraw without Overdraft Protection. The CIBC Smart Account costs $16.95 a month, rebated with a $4,000 end-of-day balance every day of the month.

To ask for a fee back, contact CIBC soon after it posts, name the fee, its date and amount, and ask for a one-time courtesy refund. CIBC decides — it isn’t guaranteed.

CIBC fees
Non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee$10.00 each time a payment item is presented or re-presented for payment (Canadian dollar personal deposit accounts)[1][3][4]CIBC says it won’t charge an NSF fee on the same deposit account more than once within 2 business days, or if the account is overdrawn by less than $10.00. CIBC says Overdraft Protection (subject to credit approval) helps you avoid declined transactions and NSF fees.
Overdraft fee without Overdraft Protection$5.00 charge, plus interest at CIBC’s overdraft rate (currently 21% a year), when CIBC chooses to process a debit that overdraws your account (based on end-of-day balances)[1]CIBC says that if it allows such a debit, it has no obligation to do so again. Optional Overdraft Protection is the alternative.

CIBC’s overdraft rules

  • Federal rules in force since March 12, 2026 cap NSF fees on personal deposit accounts at federally regulated banks at $10, allow no more than one NSF fee per account within 2 business days, and allow none when the account is overdrawn by less than $10 (Financial Consumer Agency of Canada).
  • CIBC says its overdraft interest rate is currently 21% a year, calculated and debited monthly based on the final daily indebtedness in the account.
  • CIBC Overdraft Protection limits range from $100 to $5,000, subject to credit approval.
  • If you have Overdraft Protection and CIBC processes a debit that takes you to or past your limit, you pay a $5.00 Over Limit Fee plus interest, on top of your fee option (not for Quebec residents). CIBC says that if it allows such debits, it has no obligation to do so again.

How to ask for a courtesy refund

General tips — not bank policy. What works is being specific, honest and brief.

  1. Ask soon after the fee posts, and name it exactly: the fee, its date and the amount.
  2. Say briefly what happened — a deposit that hadn’t cleared yet, a timing mix-up, a first slip in years. Keep it honest.
  3. Ask for a one-time courtesy refund of that fee. If you’ve banked there a long time or rarely pay fees, it’s fair to mention it.
  4. Be polite and brief. If the answer is no, ask whether there’s a way to avoid the fee next time — low-balance alerts, overdraft settings, or a different account.
  5. Banks decide case by case. A refund once doesn’t mean you’ll get one again, and nothing guarantees one.
