Cancel on the web

  1. Sign in to Ancestry and go to Account Settings.
  2. Under the Membership section, find the membership you want to cancel and select Cancel membership or Cancel trial.
  3. Follow the prompts.
  4. Continue until you receive a cancellation confirmation number. You’ll also get a confirmation email.

Ancestry says to keep your confirmation number or email. If you have more than one membership, repeat the steps for each one. Its terms also say you can cancel by contacting Ancestry.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad (billed by Apple)

If you subscribed to Ancestry through the App Store, Apple bills you, so you cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription — you may need to scroll down. If there's no cancel button, or you see red expiration text, it's already cancelled.

Ancestry says a membership bought in the Ancestry app is bought through the Apple App Store, Google Play or the Amazon Appstore, and it must be canceled by the company you bought it through. Uninstalling the app won’t cancel it, and refunds for those purchases are handled by that company.

Cancel on Android (billed by Google Play)

If you subscribed to Ancestry through Google Play, cancel it in Google Play.

  1. On your Android device, open your subscriptions in Google Play.
  2. Select the subscription you want to cancel.
  3. Tap Cancel subscription.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Good to know before you cancel

  • Your cancellation is complete when you get a cancellation confirmation number on screen or by email. If you didn’t get one, Ancestry says to repeat the steps.
  • Cancel ahead of time. Ancestry’s terms say a trial must be canceled at least two days before it ends, and a monthly membership at least two business days before its renewal date.
  • Some semi-annual and annual memberships that are paid monthly carry a cancellation fee if you cancel early. For memberships bought on ancestry.com, the fee is the lesser of $25 (6-month) or $50 (12-month) plus taxes, or the remaining cost. On ancestry.ca it is the lesser of 25 CAD or the remaining cost, to the extent the law allows.
  • Canceling doesn’t delete your family trees, DNA results or Ancestry account. After the membership expires, your account becomes a free Registered Guest account.
  • If you’re an invited member of a family plan, you can’t cancel it. Ancestry says only the person who bought the family plan can cancel it.

Ancestry cancellation FAQ

Will I get a refund?

Usually not. Ancestry’s terms say monthly memberships aren’t refundable, and no refunds are issued once a trial ends and you’re charged. For memberships longer than a month billed upfront that didn’t start with a trial, you can cancel for a full refund (and lose access right away) during the first 14 days of your first subscription term with Ancestry. There are no refunds after a renewal, or if you have subscribed to Ancestry before.

When does my access end?

Ancestry says that if you cancel before your current membership period ends, you can keep using your benefits until the expiration date. Canceling turns off automatic renewal and doesn’t end the current period right away.

Why was I charged after I canceled?

Ancestry lists these causes: the cancellation didn’t finish, you canceled too close to your renewal date, your membership was paused and then resumed, you have another membership or a second Ancestry account, or an early termination fee applied.

Can I pause instead of canceling?

Where available, Ancestry’s terms say you can pause a subscription that automatically renews by delaying your renewal payment for up to 2 months at the end of your billing cycle. You lose access to paid content during the pause.
