How to cancel Verizon

For Verizon mobile, sign in to My Verizon, choose Chat with us and type Cancel, or call Customer Service; Fios home service is disconnected by phone or through a My Verizon chat. A mobile cancellation takes effect on the last day of the billing period in which you cancel.

Cancel mobile service through My Verizon chat

  1. Sign in to My Verizon.
  2. Choose Chat with us.
  3. Type “Cancel” into the Ask a question box.
  4. Follow the prompts to disconnect a line, or choose to chat with a live agent.

Verizon gives the same steps for closing your whole account. It says you must pay off any outstanding Device Payment balances before disconnecting the associated lines.

Cancel mobile service by phone

  1. Call 800-922-0204, the Mobile account and billing number on Verizon’s Contact us page (8 AM - 7 PM EDT Monday to Saturday, 8 AM - 5 PM EDT Sunday).
  2. Ask for Customer Service before you disconnect. Verizon says calling first lets you see if you qualify for additional offers.
  3. Have the Account Owner’s name, phone number and Account PIN (or the last 4 digits of the Account Owner’s SSN) ready.

Verizon says prepaid mobile service, 5G Home Internet and LTE Home Internet have their own disconnect FAQs.

Disconnect Fios home service through My Verizon

  1. Open your My Verizon Account Settings & profile page and sign in when prompted.
  2. Select the Disconnect link on the right side of the page.
  3. Select Start chat.

  5. Choose Disconnect Fios home service.
  6. Select Chat with a representative.

Verizon describes this as disconnecting through My Verizon with a live chat agent.

Disconnect Fios home service by phone

  1. Call 1-800-VERIZON (800-837-4966) Monday - Friday, 8 AM-7 PM ET, or Saturday, 8 AM-5 PM ET.
  2. Have your account information on hand.

Good to know before you cancel

  • A mobile cancellation isn’t effective the day you contact Verizon. It takes effect on the last day of the billing period in which you cancel, and since you pay for the full month, Verizon recommends scheduling the disconnection toward the end of your billing cycle.
  • Your final mobile bill includes usage fees, taxes and surcharges through your termination date. Verizon says any remaining device payment balance is charged in full on it, and device promotion credits stop.
  • If you’re moving your number to another carrier, keep your Verizon account open until the last line is moved and your final bill is issued. It closes by itself once the same numbers are ported; if you get new numbers instead, you must close it yourself.
  • If you disconnect Fios while under contract, you may be charged an early termination fee. Verizon says it is prorated, with a maximum of $350 that decreases by $15 per month.
  • Rented Fios equipment must be returned within 30 days of disconnecting to avoid an unreturned equipment charge.

Or let Wally do it

Ask Wally cancel my Verizon. Where Verizon can be managed on the web, Wally works through Verizon’s website in its own live browser, on a best-effort basis — you can watch every step, and take over at any time.

You sign in yourself — your password goes to Verizon, never to Wally. Then Wally checks your next statement to confirm the charge stopped.

Verizon handles cancellations in a chat with its agents or by phone, so Wally may not be able to finish this one for you — and it can’t make the phone call.

Verizon cancellation FAQ

Can I cancel Verizon online or without calling?

Yes. For mobile, Verizon says to sign in to My Verizon, choose Chat with us, type Cancel and follow the prompts, or chat with a live agent. For Fios, you open your My Verizon settings, select Disconnect and start a chat. Verizon describes the chat route rather than a standalone cancel button, and says calling first lets mobile customers see if they qualify for additional offers.

Will I get a refund?

Verizon’s disconnect help doesn’t mention a refund for the unused part of your last month; for mobile it says you pay for the full month. It does say a Fios credit balance takes up to 60 days to process and return, and that mobile security deposit returns are processed within 30-60 days, less any outstanding service charges.

What happens to my number and my Verizon perks?

Verizon says federal regulations require it to wait 45 days before reassigning a disconnected number. Most promotional or perk subscriptions, such as Disney+ or Apple Music, cancel automatically when your service ends, though in some cases a previous subscription you had directly with a provider may reactivate.

Can I change my mind, or pause instead?

For mobile, Verizon says you can cancel a request to disconnect until the day before the disconnection date, using the same My Verizon chat or Customer Service. For Fios, Verizon says that if you’ll be out of town anywhere from 30 days to 9 months you don’t need to cancel and can suspend your services instead.
