Wally vs YNAB
The short version
YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a budgeting app built around its own method — give every dollar a job — with goals, debt tools and reports. Wally is an AI agent for your money: it watches your accounts and email, and does jobs itself — cancelling subscriptions and asking your bank to refund fees — in a browser you can watch.
Disclosure: we make Wally, so we’re not neutral. Every fact about YNAB comes from its own website and is linked below, and this page says when YNAB is the better pick.

When YNAB is the better pick
Choose YNAB if any of these matter most to you. From its own website:
- A long free trial — 34 days, with no credit card needed when you sign up directly — and a free year for college students.[1]
- One subscription covers up to six people.[1]
- A budgeting method of its own, with targets and debt-payoff tools — and apps for Android, iPad and Apple Watch as well as iPhone and the web.[1][2][3]
- Bank import beyond North America (select UK and EU banks), file import anywhere, and an API.[1][3]
Where Wally is different
It does the job itself, in a browser you can watch
Ask Wally to cancel a subscription or ask your bank to refund a fee, and it works through the website in its own live browser. You sign in yourself — your password goes to that company, never to Wally — and nothing runs without your OK.
It reads your email, if you connect it
Connect Gmail or Outlook and Wally finds subscriptions, bills, free trials and returns in your email — including ones that haven’t charged your card yet.
It takes tasks from chat
Ask a question about your money and get an answer from your own numbers, or set a standing task and let Wally keep at it on its own clock until you say stop.
Read-only, and paid for by you alone
Wally can see your accounts but can never move money. Your subscription is its only income — no ads, no selling your data, no kickbacks.
Wally’s drawbacks
What Wally doesn’t do, or doesn’t do yet:
- No Android app — Wally is on iPhone and the web.
- No free plan. The free trial is 7 days, on the yearly iPhone plan.
- No credit score or credit report.
- Cancelling works best on about 20 popular services, where Wally starts on the cancel page; on other sites it works best effort. It can’t cancel anything that needs a phone call or a visit.
- Gmail connections are open to a limited number of accounts for now; Outlook works for everyone.
- It’s younger than most apps it’s compared with here, so it has a shorter track record.
- Works with US and Canadian banks only.
